Meet Sam Stone
Sam brings a wealth of experience and a genuine passion for guiding individuals towards healing and transformation. Finding enjoyment in life is a strong value which both ignited her own fascination in learning about mental health and wellness, as well as driving the desire to help others find their own peace and enjoyment. With her extensive background and dedication to ethical, culturally responsive, and socially just work, Sam is committed to making a meaningful impact on the community, by promoting and cultivating health in individual systems, which can resonate and ripple throughout the community, and the world.
A Journey of Compassionate Healing
Sam’s journey in the field of therapy began with her early work as a mental health nurse, where she developed a deep understanding of how different presenting issues manifest and maintain themselves. This led to further training as a public health nurse, where a deeper appreciation of attachment, the early years, ongoing relationships, and how the environment, society and culture contribute to mental health outcomes. This experience inspired the big move to Canada with her husband and two dogs.
Her lifelong dream of becoming a therapist became reality when the opportunity came to pursue training as a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT) in 2018. Since then, Sam has been on a continuous path of growth, earning her Master’s in Counselling Psychology and acquiring valuable experience in trauma-informed care and addiction recovery. This has included learning about and implementing tools from a range of theories and modalities, such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) and Self-Regulation Therapy (SRT).
Expertise and Specializations
Sam’s expertise spans across various areas and life-stages, including specialized care for youth and families, support for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), compassionate addiction recovery, empowerment for those with food and body image issues, and embracing neurodiversity. Her compassionate approach and evidence-based techniques empower individuals to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and hope.
1. Specialized Care for Youth and Families: Sam provides a nurturing environment for young people aged 13 and up, fostering open communication and understanding within families. Research shows that a lot of mental health problems first present themselves during the adolescent stage of life. This can be confusing and difficult for the whole family. Sam provides individual counselling for the young person and works collaboratively with the family.
2. Support for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD): With her compassionate approach, Sam helps clients understand and work with their emotions, while cultivating a healthy relationship with themselves and with others.
3. Compassionate Addiction Recovery: Sam offers unwavering support to those in recovery, guiding them with empathy and practical tools for maintaining their health, sobriety and getting the most fulfillment out of life.
4. Empowering Those with Food and Body Image Issues: Developing a healthy relationship with the body does not come naturally to those who have spent their lives trying to change it. Experiencing food freedom is not an automatic reality for so many people. Both can become reality, as Sam helps clients develop a positive self-image and provides guidance in embracing a holistic approach to wellness.
5. Embracing Neurodiversity: Sam welcomes individuals who are neurodivergent or who may suspect that they are, providing a non-judgmental space where differences are celebrated.
Sam’s Personal Touch
In addition to her professional endeavors, Sam is also a dedicated wife and mother of one human and two fur babies. Originally from the UK, Sam and her husband made the move to Kelowna in pursuit of an outdoors lifestyle and better work-life balance. Together with their boxer, Henry, and Rottweiler, Maggie, they enjoy longboarding, paddleboarding, and hiking, immersing themselves in the natural beauty of the Kelowna region. Their little Canadian baby is now growing up surrounded by the same love for adventure and nature that brought them to Canada and this vibrant community.
