Relational, Nervous System & Psychedelic-Assisted Approaches in Kelowna, BC
Helping individuals and couples build more connected relationships—with themselves, with others, and with the lives they want to create.
How Arend Works:
Arend's approach is relational, person-centered, and grounded in the belief that meaningful change happens through awareness, accountability, and connection. Drawing from Relational Life Therapy (RLT), he helps clients better understand the patterns, protective strategies, and relationship dynamics that shape their lives.
He brings a balance of warmth and honesty into the room, supporting clients in developing greater self-awareness while moving toward practical and sustainable change. Rather than focusing solely on symptom reduction, Arend works collaboratively with clients to help them build more connected relationships—with themselves, with others, and with the lives they want to create.
He believes that awareness without action rarely creates lasting change, and that meaningful growth often occurs when insight is paired with accountability, practice, and new relational experiences.
As his work continues to evolve, Arend has developed a growing interest in the role of the nervous system in healing, communication, emotional regulation, and relationships. Through ongoing training in Somatic Experiencing® and other nervous system-informed approaches, he continues to deepen his understanding of how people move from survival into greater flexibility, connection, and choice.
Arend believes meaningful relationships are built on honesty, accountability, and integrity. While therapy can be supportive and compassionate, it can also involve gently challenging patterns that no longer serve us, helping clients explore new ways of showing up in their lives and relationships.
BEYOND THE THERAPY ROOM
Arend is also a father—a role that continues to shape how he listens, leads, and shows up in the world.
Fatherhood has deepened his appreciation for presence, accountability, play, repair, and the importance of showing up consistently in relationships. It continues to influence the way he approaches conversations, how he holds space for others, and the kind of presence he brings into both his work and his life.
His core values are faith and integrity, which guide both his personal life and his professional practice.
His hope is not simply to help people survive difficult seasons, but to support them in building lives and relationships that feel more connected, purposeful, and fully their own.
As Brené Brown writes:
"Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen."
It is an honour to be part of that process with you.

THE PERSPECTIVES BEHIND THE PRACTICE
Arend's work continues to be shaped by a variety of clinicians, authors, researchers, and teachers whose perspectives on relationships, communication, accountability, trauma, and human growth inform both his counselling practice and the way he moves through the world. While no single approach or teacher defines his work, each has contributed to the relational, accountable, and growth-oriented lens he brings into the therapy room.
PSYCHEDELIC-ASSISTED THERAPY
Arend has completed psychedelic-assisted therapy training through Medicinal Mindfulness in Boulder, Colorado, including training in cannabis-assisted, psilocybin-assisted, and ketamine-assisted therapy.
He approaches this work through a relational and nervous-system-informed lens, with an emphasis on preparation, integration, pacing, accountability, and harm reduction. Rather than focusing on "breakthrough experiences," Arend believes meaningful healing occurs when people are supported in staying connected to themselves while moving at a pace their system can genuinely integrate.
Whether clients are preparing for an experience, seeking integration support afterward, or exploring whether this approach may be appropriate for them, he aims to provide a grounded and thoughtful space for exploration.

Training & Background
Arend completed his training in Applied Psychology with a specialization in Professional Counselling through Kelowna College of Professional Counselling (KCPC).
Before entering the counselling field, he spent years running his own flooring business and later coordinating projects within the construction industry. Working closely with homeowners, he developed a deep appreciation for both craftsmanship and relationship—paying attention to the details that mattered most to each person.
In many ways, he sees counselling through a similar lens. Just as someone invites a contractor into their home, counselling is an invitation into something even more personal—your inner world. The stakes are higher and the work is deeper, but the foundation remains the same: trust, care, and collaboration.
His work has been shaped by the teachings of Terry Real (Relational Life Therapy), Brené Brown, Gabor Maté, and Richard Schwartz (Internal Family Systems), as well as voices like Chris Voss and Michael Pollan, whose work explores communication, behaviour, and human transformation.

A little more about Arend and the lens he brings to his work.
-
Many clients describe Arend as warm, direct, and down-to-earth. He values authenticity, accountability, and genuine connection, creating a space where clients can explore challenges honestly while feeling supported. His approach is collaborative rather than prescriptive, helping clients develop greater awareness while moving toward meaningful and sustainable change.
-
While conversation remains an important part of the process, Arend is interested in helping clients connect insight with action. He often explores patterns, relationships, communication styles, and nervous system responses, supporting clients in translating awareness into meaningful change in daily life.
-
Arend works with both individuals and couples. He has a particular interest in relationships, communication, emotional regulation, attachment, life transitions, and helping people build more connected relationships with themselves and others.
-
Arend believes that many of our thoughts, behaviours, emotions, and relationship patterns make more sense when viewed through the lens of the nervous system. Through ongoing training in Somatic Experiencing® and other nervous system-informed approaches, he continues to explore how people move from survival, protection, and reactivity into greater flexibility, connection, and choice.

His work emphasizes preparation, integration, pacing, accountability, and harm reduction. He can support clients who are exploring whether this work is appropriate for them, preparing for an experience, or integrating insights afterward.
-
Rather than positioning himself as an expert on someone else's life, Arend works collaboratively with clients to explore possibilities, patterns, and choices. While he may offer observations, perspectives, or gentle challenges, he believes meaningful change is most sustainable when clients discover what feels true and aligned for themselves.
-
Before entering the counselling profession, Arend spent years working in construction and running his own flooring business. Through that work, he developed a deep appreciation for relationships, trust, communication, and the importance of showing up consistently for people. He also learned that meaningful change often happens through attention to small details, patience, and a commitment to the work itself. Those same values continue to shape the way he approaches counselling today.

Arend believes many of our deepest wounds are formed in relationship, and many of our most meaningful opportunities for healing are found there as well. Through our experiences with others, we learn how to connect, protect ourselves, trust, mistrust, move toward people, or pull away from them. These patterns often make sense in the context of our life experiences, even when they no longer serve us.
As a result, healing frequently happens in relationship too. Honest, accountable, and supportive relationships can provide opportunities to experience ourselves differently, develop new ways of relating, and practice showing up in ways that are more aligned with who we want to be. While awareness and acceptance are essential foundations, lasting change is often supported through accountability, practice, new experiences, and relationships that invite us to move beyond familiar patterns.
